Chiropractic Care and Childhood Asthma

Two children with a teacher.Asthma is reaching epidemic levels in the United States. It’s the most common long-term disease suffered in childhood. Asthma may be more common than it used to be, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a serious condition. Every single day nine Americans die from asthma and the death rate for children under the age of 19 has increased by almost 80 percent in the last thirty years.

If your child has been diagnosed with asthma, you probably feel overwhelmed and frightened about your treatment options. Between steroids, nebulizers and inhalers, an asthma diagnosis can be a frightening and costly sentence.

However, there may be a safe, natural and drug-free way to treat your child’s asthma. Chiropractic care may be able to relieve asthma symptoms in childhood. In many cases, a subluxation in the spine can lead to irritated nerves, which results in asthma. The nervous system is housed in the spine and is responsible for the proper functioning of the lungs. Interference in the nervous system can lead to problems like asthma which can cause the lungs to work improperly.

In addition to directly improving the efficiency of the nervous system, chiropractic care also boosts the immune system and helps patients to maintain a higher quality of health. This is particularly important for kids with asthma, as they’re much more likely to suffer an asthma attack when their body is fighting off a cold.

Chiropractic care may not be able to cure asthma, but regular visits with a chiropractor have been shown to provide some children with an improvement in their asthma symptoms. In addition, studies have proved that chiropractic care is a great way to increase a child’s overall wellness. Between regular adjustments and expert advice, a chiropractor can be a great source of wellness in your child’s life.

If your child has asthma, consider scheduling an appointment with a qualified chiropractor to talk over your options. A few simple adjustments may be all that’s standing between your child and a lifetime of freer breathing.
