The Long-Term Effects of Prescription Pain Pills

Because natural health and healing is such an important part of chiropractic care (some would say it’s the most important part!), prescription medications are usually suggested only when there’s no other solution. By contrast, the mainstream medical community relies on drugs to manage a wide variety of problems which can cause all kinds of problems.

Your chiropractic team believes that medication should be used only as a last resort method. While this may seem like a radical belief to many people, the fact is that regular use of pharmaceuticals is a new practice in mankind’s history. Our ancestors did not have access to the same prescription medications that we do, and while this fact sometimes came with tragic consequences, it also had many benefits; and nowhere is this more evident than it is in prescription pain medication.

The Dangers of Pain Pills

Pain medications are responsible for thousands of death in the United States every year, the most dangerous of which are opiate-based drugs like morphine, hydrocodone, vicodin, codeine and oxycodone, all drugs that are commonly prescribed to combat a wide variety of pain symptoms. It’s estimated that more than 14,000 people die annually from an overdose of opiate-based pain medication.

Sometimes these deaths are intentional—after all, agonizing pain can lead some people to believe that they have no other options. Other times, they’re completely accidental. I lost a beloved family member some years ago due to an accidental overdose of opiate pain killers. In her haze she forgot that she’d already taken her medication, took it again and was tragically lost.

Accidental death or suicide aren’t the only risks that come with pain pills. Other side effects include nausea, drowsiness, personality changes, addiction and impaired thinking. Over time these side effects may lead to consequences even more severe than the pain that they were originally prescribed to handle. Depression and loss of family or career are frequent unwanted symptoms of long term pain pill use.
