Weight Loss and Your Chiropractor

Obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States right now. More than one third of all adults in this country (35 percent) are obese. Obesity is poised to take over smoking as the number one cause of preventable death worldwide. In 2008, obesity costs were estimated at $147 billion; while medical costs for the obese were more than $1,400 higher than those of normal weight.

If you’re overweight or obese, none of this information is a great surprise. You know that the only way to lose weight is by taking care of your body and expending more calories in a day than you consume. However, you might be surprised to learn that chiropractic care may be able to help you lose weight.

The Connection Between Brain and Body

Think of your brain as your body’s command center. It is in charge of most of your bodily functions. In order to perform this important work, it needs soldiers to gather information and report back to the brain and to carry out instructions. This job is done by your nervous system, which is housed inside your spine. When this system is functioning properly, the brain is able to accomplish its regular tasks without effort.

The problem is when something goes wrong in the communication network. Subluxations of the spine can interrupt these signals, leading to an informational “traffic jam” which can keep your body from working at peak efficiency. When this occurs, the result can be lowered resistance to disease and an overall decrease in health.

Chiropractors know how important this communication system is. Through strategic adjustments to the spine, your chiropractor is able to restore the function of these nerves. Moving the spine into proper alignment will eventually remove the interference between the brain and the nerves, which clears the path for the body to begin healing itself again.

Chiropractic and Weight Loss

There have been numerous studies completed which show that there’s a strong correlation between the health of the spine and digestive health. Subluxations can prevent your body from digesting food properly, which can lead to water weight and the storing of excess calories. Adjusting the spine may be able to help the body’s ability to digest food more efficiently and regulate natural functions.  This can lead to weight loss and an all-around improvement to overall health.

Chiropractic care can also help you to lose weight by increasing flexibility. It’s hard to get enough exercise when muscles in the back are stiff and sore, yet exercise is essential for long-term weight loss success. An alignment can help relieve pain, which increases mobility.

While chiropractic care is not a magic bullet for weight loss, when combined with proper diet and exercise, it’s a great tool in your healthy living arsenal.
