Want to learn more about good nutrition—then why not invite your chiropractor to dinner? Not literally, of course; however, if you want to learn about the impact of nutrition on your life, your doctor of chiropractic is a wonderful resource.
Most people think about chiropractors as doctors of the spine. And while this is true, there are all sorts of other ways that your chiropractic team can help you attain a level of wellness that you’ve only imagined before now.
A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine shows that chiropractors are concerned with much more than their patients’ spines. They asked chiropractors practicing in the state of New York if they valued the use of nutritional counseling and if they used it in their own practice. The results were extremely encouraging.
Eighty percent of the survey respondents reported using some form of nutritional counseling in their practices, typically covering chronic problems like coronary artery disease, diabetes, obesity and musculoskeletal system issues.
Many people don’t realize that chiropractic care is the leading alternative healthcare treatment in this country. That’s because chiropractors believe strongly in a couple of very important issues:
- Wellness is an ongoing process. It’s not something that is defined as the absence of illness, but as a constant goal throughout life.
- Wellness of the body is only one part of a patient’s goal. In order to attain true wellness, we must seek a balance of health in the mind, body and spirit.
Because chiropractors believe so strongly in the importance of wellness, they are able to address a variety of health issues that can be relieved or cured through good nutrition. Many inflammatory conditions and autoimmune disorders like chronic inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia can be managed effectively through holistic methods like chiropractic care and nutritional education.
While the study is in no way conclusive, it does show that many chiropractors feel that nutritional guidance is a vitally important service that they perform for their patients and most chiropractors provide this service for free or at a reasonable cost.
Holistic medicine is becoming much more common. As our knowledge of wellness continues to improve, this trend is expected to grow even further. If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of holistic healthcare or how a healthy diet can increase your level of wellness, talk to your chiropractic team. Your chiropractor would love to talk to you about the steps you can take to empower your own health. Remember, health isn’t something that we should think about when we’re sick; it’s a goal that we reach for every single day, and with your chiropractic team by your side, you’ll be well on your way to meeting that goal.
