October 12th is International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN), an annual event that encourages people to look toward the sky and take notice of the moon. People around the world mark this day as one that they spend with friends and family celebrating the moon and the fun is coming right here to Red Oak.
On Saturday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m., you and your family are invited to join the Red Oak Library and the Indian Trail Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program at the Cherry Creek Nature Preserve for an evening of observation and fun.
The International Observe the Moon Night is made up of a wide variety of educators, scientists and moon enthusiasts around the globe. Their goal is to help instill a sense of wonderment and curiosity to the public while staying up to date with scientific discoveries about our nearest celestial neighbor.
This free event includes:
- Naturalist led moonlight hikes along the preserve.
- An astronomy app for your mobile devices.
- Prose and poetry readings about the moon.
- Viewing of the moon, planets and stars via telescope.
- Moon related activities.
All ages are welcome to attend the event and there’s no cost for admission. However, registration is required. You can make your reservations by email. Remember that this is an outdoor event, so you’ll want to dress accordingly. That means you’ll want to wear closed toed shoes that are suitable for walking, long pants, long sleeves and socks. Remember, mosquitoes prefer dark colors, so you may not want to come in black and don’t forget to pack the insect repellent. You don’t want your evening ruined by biting bugs. This is a weather-sensitive event, so if it rains the program will be cancelled.
So, join the Red Oak Library and the Indian Trail Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program on Saturday, October 12th and enjoy the companionship and sense of natural wonder that this event will surely bring to your heart and mind.
