If you’re expecting a new baby, you probably feel as if you’ll never reach the end of your questions. There are so many different things for an expectant mother to know and so many things that can potentially harm the new life growing inside of you. It can seem sometimes like there’s a never-ending list that’s titled, “What I have to give up until the baby’s here,” and every day something new is tacked on.
How about some good news for a change? There’s no reason why you should stop visiting your Chiropractor just because you’re pregnant. As time goes on, healthcare practitioners seem to be wising up to the fact that women are still ordinary human beings, just pregnant ones. Unless you have a pregnancy that requires special care, you can almost certainly continue to visit your Chiropractor for routine adjustments, just like you did before.
This doesn’t mean that your Chiropractic team won’t make some adjustments for your condition. Expectant mothers require a little extra TLC, so if you think you may be pregnant, speak up. Most Chiropractors are experienced and trained to work with women while they are expecting. Some Chiropractors have even made pregnant women their area of specialty.
Don’t put off adjustments while you’re expecting. During pregnancy your body undergoes many changes, which can result in your spine or joints getting out of alignment. Carrying the added weight of your developing baby can cause a strain on your lower back and hips that a Chiropractic adjustment may be able to ease. Keeping your spine and pelvis aligned throughout your pregnancy can increase your chances of being able to have a natural childbirth. There’s some evidence suggesting that it can even shorten the time that you spend in labor. Now that’s something every expectant mother wants to hear!
Some of the potential benefits of seeking out Chiropractic care during pregnancy include:
- healthier overall pregnancy
- controlling the symptoms of morning sickness
- easing back neck and joint pain
Chiropractic care encourages your body to heal itself; this can be especially important during pregnancy, when your body is dealing with hormone changes. One of the changes that most pregnant women aren’t aware of is the change in elasticity of ligaments; this is what allows the baby’s head to fit through your pelvis. Unfortunately, hormone changes can also result in the ligaments in the rest your body to become loose. You’ve probably noticed that a lot of pregnant women stand differently, or become clumsier as their time draws near. That’s often the result of loose ligaments. Regular chiropractic care can keep your ligaments tight and strong.
Taking the best possible care of your body while you’re pregnant is important for both you and your baby. Adding chiropractic treatment to the prenatal care that you’re already receiving from your primary care physician or OB/GYN is an excellent way to ease some of the discomforts of pregnancy, so you can enjoy the miracle of bringing new life into the world.
