It’s almost time for school to let out for the summer, and if you’re not looking forward to watching your kids spend the next three months in front of the Xbox, we’ve got a great way to help you get them out of the house.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is full of fun things to do, but if you’re interested in getting the kids outside and keeping them entertained without spending an arm and a leg, there’s no better place to be than the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. Located at 9601 Fossil Ridge Road in Fort Worth, the FWNC is a hidden jewel in a big city, reminiscent of the old Fort Worth/Dallas area hundreds of years ago.
Why You Should Visit the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge
The FWNC&R was designated a national natural landmark in 1980 by the National Park Service and this beautiful area is an inexpensive way to pass a weekend day. Admission is only $5 for adults aged 13-64; $2 for kids 3-12; $3 for seniors over the age of 65 and free for kids under the age of three. Military families can benefit by taking $1 off of each family member’s admission with military I.D.
Just in time for the end of school, the FWNC&R is rolling out all kinds of fun activities. While there are too many to list, here are a few of the events taking place every weekend in June:
- Guided nature hikes
- Turtle watching
- Kids hike (strollers welcomed)
- Early morning bird watching
- Canoe tours
- Texas hummingbird viewing and lesson
- Drawing lessons on the boardwalk
- Kayak tours
- Skull investigating
- Preschool discovery club featuring hummingbirds
- Full moon paddle
- Nature En Español: bilingual nature hiking
- Wildflower walks
- Evening strolls with a naturalist
- Preschool butterfly lesson
- A hike on a trail not listed on the map
Most of these activities are free with the cost of admission, and those that aren’t are still very cost effective. If you’re a member of the FWNC&R, you save even more. The savings range from a few dollars off to absolutely free!
Why spend hundreds of dollars on an event when you and your family can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Mother Nature for just a few dollars? Make a plan to spend your weekends enjoying all the delights that the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge has to deliver for just one month. At the end of that month your kids just might start asking if they can do it all over again in July.
