When it comes to diet trends, it seems as if yesterday’s friend is today’s foe. Here are three “diet” foods that your nutritionist wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole.
- Rice cakes. If you lived through the 1980s then you probably purchased a few of these crunchy “treats” in your quest to lose weight. Unfortunately, rice cakes can have a glycemic index rating as high as 91 (glucose has a rating of 100), which means they’re not a good choice for your waistline or your taste buds.
- Fat free salad dressings. Remember carrying your favorite low fat salad dressing in your purse so you wouldn’t break your diet while eating out? This trend is now passé and for good reason—if you take the fat out of food you need to put something in to replace it. All too often, that something is sugar. Try to stick to vinegar and olive oil or a little lemon for a tasty salad without all the added sugars.
- Diet sodas. If there are two things I know about life, it’s that there’s no free lunch and there’s no magical food to help you lose weight. Diet sodas came out around 30 years ago and were touted as a healthy alternative to regular sodas. Unfortunately, they also came with health risks to our kidneys and increased weight gain. According to a 2008 study, just one diet soda a day puts you at a 34 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome. If you do nothing else for your health, cut out carbonated soft drinks.
When it comes to your health, there is no magic bullet. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and visiting your chiropractic team may not be an instant cure to all your problems, but they can help us to effectively lose weight and keep it off, no matter what new fads come along.
